Spiraling Design Cycle
The two design process models shown are more complicated
than the Cyclic Design
Model in their attempt to show the evolution
of a design idea as spiraling and converging
towards a solution. The model to the left, drawn from
the Dartmouth Project
for Teaching Engineering Problem Solving ends after
a second iteration, while the model below, (taken from
the NSF-funded Technology For Design project developed
at TERC), shows solutions being arrived at the end of
different iterations.
Neither model attempts to show that a design can be
completed at any time in the cycle. Nor do these models
attempt to show that there is no particular order
in which the various design strategies must be done.
