Designing Curriculum
Bernie Zubrowski is one of the most prolific curriculum
designers in the US. He has developed displays for the
Boston Children's Museum and currently develops curriculum
at EDC -- Educational Development Centers in Watertown,
MA. In this interview, Bernie describes his design
process, which combines constructivism with an artistic
approach to teaching science. You will hear him contrast
his materials-informed approach with that of Grant Wiggins'
backward design. Listen to the case he makes for getting
user feedback when designing a new learning system--
the Boston Children's Museum is a great place to see
firsthand how users (kids) react to prototypes of a
new display. Notice the design criteria that Bernie
mentions as he describes his working at engaging young
learners. How could a similar approach be used when
you design a lesson or adapt a piece of curriculum to
your classes?
